The Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) has counseled the Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma to take advantage of the state’s huge reservoir of qualified engineers in advancing his vision of providing infrastructure in the state.
The society made the call in a statement signed by Engr Innocent Eze Ochiagha, Chairman – NSE, Owerri Branch and Engr Chibuike Onyejietu, Chairman, Heartland Media & Local Content Committee.
It emphasized the need to provide infrastructure that would not just serve the present generation but also future generation of Imolites.
The society maintained that it was time to say a final no to the era of substandard wasteful, shameful and hazardous infrastructure in the state and usher in the era of durable, well-planned, cost-effective and expertly executed infrastructure in the state.
It bemoaned what obtained during the administration of Owelle Rochas Okorocha when billions of naira was funneled into the provision of infrastructure with not much progress recorded.
According to the NSE, Imolites found themselves during Okorocha’s era in a situation, where there was so much movement, yet no miles were covered, and if any miles were covered at all, it was backwards.
It regretted that some of the roads that were scrapped off in the guise of reconstruction during Okorocha’s era would have still been more useful today than the poorly constructed roads that have become launching pad for ecological problems in the state.
The society noted that Imo State would have been more economically prosperous, better secured and more socially vibrant than it is today, if the investments made towards enhancing public infrastructure were properly channeled in consultation with trained and certified engineers.
The NSE noted that Imo State has lost some time and is obviously lagging behind in infrastructural development but stated that with appropriate steps taken, the situation could be remedied.
According to it, Imo State boasts of the best crop of NSE members who are Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN)-certified who are ready to support the infrastructural ambition of the state government.
