The Imo State Ministry of Justice has urged individuals who are interested in being appointed Justice of Peace (JP) to apply for consideration.
The ministry explained that Justice of Peace is a non-stipendry lay magistrate and judicial officer appointed by the state Attorney-General to preserve peace, suppress riots and affrays.
According to a release from the ministry, a Justice of Peace also disperses disorderly and tumultuous assemblies in his area of jurisdiction.
The release added that in the performance of his duty, the Justice of Peace may seek the assistance of a police officer or any person who shall be bound to obey such directions he may give.
It added that the Justice of Peace could also perform other quasi-judicial and administrative functions like administering oaths and attestation of legal instruments.
While no formal legal education is necessary, the release submitted that interested persons must be of unquestionable integrity who seek to promote and protect the rights of individuals, promote peace and orderliness in the society.
The release reads; “Do you want to be a Justice of Peace in Imo State? Application is now ongoing. In Imo State, a Justice of Peace is a non stipendry lay magistrate and Judicial Officer appointed by the State Attorney-General to preserve peace, suppress riots and affrays and disperse disorderly and tumultuous assemblies in his area.
“In the performance of his duties, the Justice of Peace may call in assistance from any police officer or any person, who shall be bound to obey such directions he may give. He can also perform some other quasi-judicial and administrative functions like administration of oaths/declarations, attestation of legal instruments etc.
“He is expected to be a person of unquestionable integrity who seeks to promote and protect the rights of individuals, promote peace and orderliness in the society. Formal legal education is not a qualification to be a Justice of Peace. For further details, contact the office of the Attorney-General Imo State”.
