Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a 55-year-old woman, Mrs Chinyere Ohanyere for allegedly trafficking a set of twins for an undisclosed fee.
Mrs Ohanyere, a native of Oguta Local Government Area of the state, was arrested at Graceland Estate, Owerri, the state capital.
Our correspondent gathered that the woman is cooling her heels in one of the cells at the command headquarters in Owerri.
She reportedly pretended to have given birth to the twins on September 3, at Irete in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.
A police source told our correspondent on Thursday that the cops arrested her on Tuesday following a tip-off.
The source said “She is Mrs Chinyere Ohanyere aka madam Chichi 55 years old. She was arrested at Greenland Estate, Owerri with the two babies. She alleged she delivered the babies on Friday, September 3 while medical investigations have proven that she didn’t deliver any baby. She bought them and pretended to have delivered the babies. A boy and a girl”.
“Also arrested is her accomplice, Adaeze Ohanyere. She is also being detained alongside the principal suspect. They are helping the cops in the investigation process and in arresting the woman who allegedly sold the babies to her”.
“We got wind of the crime and the woman’s house was stormed by security operatives at Graceland in Owerri and she, Adaeze and one other woman were arrested. The twins were recovered from her and had been taken to motherless babies home”.
“The woman insisted that she was the one who delivered the babies. She was quickly taken to a hospital for medical examinations and it was proven through medical investigations that she didn’t deliver the babies”.
He added that she is now helping the cops in the investigation process; revealing that she led the operatives to a place where she claimed to have given birth to the twins and the woman got information in time and fled.
“We are not relenting and we are committed to arresting the other members of the syndicate. This is a crime against humanity. The other lady, Adaeze Ohanyere had been arrested before now in a child trafficking case also”.
When contacted, the police spokesperson for the state, Micheal Abattam, confirmed the crime and assured that the suspects would be charged to court at the end of the investigations.
