The Commissioner of Police, CP, Abutu Yaro has inaugurated a high-powered team to carry out a forensic investigation into the case of a nine-month-old child allegedly stolen in Akwa Ibom State but brought to Imo State for sale.
A post which has gone viral claimed the child was being offered for N400,000 by an elderly woman, Mfon and a young lady, Esther who were intercepted at the loading bay of a popular transport company in Owerri.
The spokesman of the police in the state, Michael Abatam disclosed in a statement dated July 16 that the command was on top of the matter and would make the outcome of the investigation public once concluded.
The CP warned child traffickers to desist from their inhuman, illegal and nefarious activities, stressing that the command was poised to trace, identify and prosecute them.
The statement reads: “The Imo State Police Command is aware of a post that has gone viral, where an old woman and a young woman carrying a baby of about 9 months suspected to have been stolen from Akwa Ibom State and brought to Imo State were caught along Mbaise Road by ABC Motor Park Owerri, bargaining to sell the little baby for four hundred thousand (N400,000.00) Naira.
“The command wishes to inform the the good people of Imo State that, we are already on top of the situation. And the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, has already inaugurated a high powered investigation team directing them to commenced forensic investigation into the viral post to unravel how the two women came about the little baby, trace and locate the real parents of the child, where the baby was stolen and for what purpose.
“The command is assuring the good people of the state that, as soon as the investigation is concluded , the outcome will be made public for all to know the real facts surrounding the viral post.
“The CP warned all child traffickers to desist from their inhuman, illegal and nefarious trade as the command do the needful to trace, identify and apprehend them for prosecution.”
