The Imo State Specialist Hospital, Umuguma in Owerri West LGA on August 12 successfully performed it’s first spinal cord surgery.
By this feat, the hospital has joined the league of spine centres in the country where complex spine surgeries could be performed safely.
A statement released by the Public Enlightenment Department of the state government disclosed that the first complex spine surgery at the hospital was performed on a 36 year old accident victim who came to the hospital paralysed.
It was gathered that to give him a chance of recovery, he underwent Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion during which a complete C6/C7 dislocation (red arrows) (whereby C7 cervical vertebra completely dislocated from C6 cervical vertebra, with C7 lying behind C6 and compressing his spinal cord), was reduced, spinal alignment restored and the spinal cord compression relieved.
Meanwhile, the management of the Imo State Specialist Hospital has thanked the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma for providing the hospital with the enabling environment to achieve this breakthrough.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Kaunda Ibebuike said the governor has been very supportive of the hospital since his assumption of office.
According to him, the hospital has improved its services and promised that the medical personnel at the hospital were rearing to break new grounds.
He seized the opportunity to debunk report of hike in charges at the hospital, saying that the report was intended by its purveyors to tarnish the image of the hospital and deceive members of the public.
