The Ijaw National Congress (INC), has inaugurated a nine man adhoc planning committee to plan a proposed All Ijaw Summit in fulfilment of the promise made by the new President, Professor Benjamin Okaba during his inauguration last week.
Okaba in an interview with journalists at the Ijaw House in Yenagoa, said the summit will be attended by selected prominent Ijaw sons and daughters irrespective of political affiliations or creed.
He noted that the summit has become necessary following the recent happenings in the country, adding that among other things the committee chaired by Rear Admiral Woyengidi Ikpete, will select a date, venue and key functionaries that will be in attendance.
“With the uncertainty bedevilling this country at the moment, we need to chart a way forward, review our past and present and see what the future has for us.
“The Ijaw people must come together and take specific decisions on issues of self determination and self actualization. What path are we following?
“Are we still comfortable in the Nigerian State? If we are comfortable, what are the minimum requirements for our continuous commitment to the Nigerian nation? What are we asking for in specific terms?”
Okaba added that there was a summit planning group working outside the INC for a long time but have now been incorporated into the new committee to work together and plan the event.
He further added that the committee has been mandated to submit a report on its resolutions in the next two weeks to guide the INC executives led by him.
