The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has cleared 16 candidates from 16 political parties to contest the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election.
In a statement titled “Final list of candidates for the 2022 Ekiti State Governorship Election”, and endorsed by its National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education, Barr. Festus Okoye, the Commission said the list was in compliance with the Electoral Act of 2022.
In the statement, the Independent National Electoral Commission announced that “in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, the Commission hereby publishes the final list of candidates for the election following the close of nominations by political parties”.
It further states that the final list is published in the Commission’s State and Local Government Offices in Ekiti State as well as its website and social media platforms for public information and as required by law.
The Commission therefore, enjoined political parties to note the provision of the law for compliance.
According to INEC, a breakdown of the cleared candidates shows that 16 political parties will slug it out at the election, while the list comprised 14 male and 2 female candidates.
The Commission further reminded the political parties that under Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, any party that observes that the name of its candidate is missing from the list should notify the Commission in writing, signed by the party’s National Chairman and Secretary, and supported with an affidavit not later than 90days to the election.

INEC also warned the political parties that failure to observe Section 32(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 in notifying the Commission of any such omission shall not be the ground to invalidate the election.
Recall that on February 16, 2022, the INEC, had published the Personal Particulars and List of Candidates, Form EC9, for the Ekiti State governorship election in its state and local government offices as required by law.
