The Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami on friday said that the series of investigations has proven that some highly profiled Nigerians are involved in financing terrorism in the country.
Malami stated this via a chat with a correspondents of a state house at the presidential villa, Abuja, saying that such persons are being profiled for prosecution.
The arrested number of suspects who are undisclosed followed the previous convictions of some Nigerians on issues of terrorism financing in United Arab Emirates, UAE.
He noted that ongoing investigations have given reasonable grounds to prosecute the Nigerian leaders who are higly profiled alongside institutions across the country.
“As you all know, back there were certain belief and conviction of Nigerians alleged to have been involved in financing terrosm in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“That bore the rise to a far-reaching investigations in Nigeria and I’m excited to report that the high rise from the wider coverage investigation has been conducted in Nigeria, persons both institutional and otherwise, were found to be culpable.
“I mean reasonable grounds for suspicion of terrorism financing have been established, or perhaps has proven to be in existence in respect of the transactions of certain higher profile individuals and businessmen across the country.
“Arising from the investigation, there exists, certainly, reasonable grounds for suspicion that a lot of Nigerians, high-profile, institutional and otherwise, are involved in terrorism financing and they are being profiled for prosecution.
“In essence, it is indeed true that the government is prosecuting and it’s indeed initiating processes of prosecuting those high-profile individuals that are found to be financing terrorism. It is indeed true.”
But the minister was reluctant to disclose the number of such suspects as he maintained that investigation was still ongoing.
He said, “Nobody is going to be left out, no stone will be left unturned. We most aggressively go after these people that are partakers of terrorist financing as far as the Nigerian state is concerned”, concluded.
