Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi has withdrawn from Nigeria’s final 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho after his Covid-19 test came out positive, officials told AFP on Monday, March 29, 2021.
Everton forward, Iwobi tested positive before the game on Saturday which ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Eagle.
He travelled back to Nigeria with the rest of the squad on Sunday.
Eagles media aide, Babafemi Raji told AFP that:
“Iwobi has left the camp. Before he left, he did not show any symptoms, he was fine.”
The 24-year-old, scored two goals during the qualifying campaign for the delayed Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Cameroon.
Nigeria’s win over Benin made sure they qualify from Group L in top spot, although they had already qualified before kick-off, credit to a goalless draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone.
Gernot Rohr’s side have 11 points from five games and are seven points ahead of third-placed Sierra Leone, with the top two teams in the group eligible for the tournament.
Nigeria host bottom of the table side, Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Tuesday, March 30.
