Operatives of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) on Wednesday apprehended a gang of sea pirates terrorizing the waterways of Akassa in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
It was gathered that some angry fishermen whose business has been affected by the activities of the gang, helped the JTF to arrest the notorious criminals.
A native of the community said: “The fishermen who have been monitoring the movement of the gang along the Brass river double-crossed the armed sea pirates, tied them before handing them over to the JTF who later released them to the Brass Divisional Police Station.
“The ugly operation of sea pirates in the area has heightened fear among indigenes of the coastal area of Nembe and Brass. The sea pirates has continued to terrorise commercial boats and abduct old and young men including stripping of market women who ply the route on daily basis”.
Our correspondent learnt that when news of their arrest filtered into the communities, the people started celebrating and urged security agents to go after the rest, saying many of them are still operating in the creeks.
Efforts to get the spokesman of the JTF wasn’t successful but it was also gathered that another notorious criminal, one Diepreye Sidisco from Peremabiri in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area was also apprehended by the JTF.
