Nigeria’s sole representative in the long jump event, Ese Brume has won a bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Team Nigeria now have their name on the medal’s table after Ese Brume won Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Brume qualified for the final stage on Sunday morning after she leapt to a distance of 6.76m, a centimetre more than the required mark to seal her place.
Brume eventually clinched third place with a 6.97m jump. Mihambo of Germany went home with gold while Reese of the USA took the silver medal.
Team Nigeria will later today add another medal to her cupboard when Blessing Oborududu fights America’s Tamyra Mensah-Stock in the female wrestling final.
The bout will take place by 1:15 pm Nigeria Time with Oborududu assured of a silver irrespective of the outcome of the fight.
The 25-year-old Brume had won bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
Having jumped a distance of 7.17m at the Chula Vista Festival in California in May, Ese had shattered Chioma Ajunwa’s 25-year long jump record of 7.12m.
Just like Chioma Ajunwa and Blessing Okagbare, Ese Brume has joined the list of Nigerian athletes that have won medals in long jump at the Olympics.
Recall that Brume was the only Nigerian athlete to reach the final of an event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, where she placed fifth with a leap of 6.81m.
