The Kogi State Commissioner for Environment, Victor Adewale Omofaiye survived kidnapping but received gunshot wounds when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
It was reliably gathered that the incident happened between Ikoyi and Iyara at about 5:00 pm.
According to the source, the commissioner was on his way to Lokoja when he was ambushed by around 20 suspected kidnappers who opened fire on his vehicle.
The source said they were three in number in the car, but the commissioner was shot by the kidnappers before they were able to flee from the area.
However, other travellers were not so lucky as scores were marched into the bush by the suspected kidnappers.
The source further confirmed that Isah Taufiq, the Chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area and the Chairman of ALGON in Kogi State, has mobilized vigilantes and hunters in search of those kidnapped by the kidnappers.
The leadership of the Ikoyi-Ijumu Development Association has stated that they are on top of the situation and that they were very impressed with the security personnel’s quick response, particularly the DPO at Iyara and vigilantes, including local hunters, who are all under the direct supervision of the Ijumu LG Chairman.
The Olukoyi has also reportedly visited the site of the incident for an on-the-spot investigation.
Meanwhile, Ade Omofaiye, the Commissioner, is said to be in a stable condition after escaping with injuries.
The state police public relations officer, DSP William Aya, who confirmed the incident, however, said that the number of those kidnapped had yet to be ascertained.
He stated that officers are on the lookout for the kidnappers in coordination with other security agencies and local vigilantes.
