Madam Betinah Benson, the kidnapped mother of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Rt. Hon. Konbowei Friday Benson, has regained her freedom, one month after she was whisked away from her residence by armed men dressed in military uniform.
Although details of her release are still sketchy, it was gathered that she was released around Gbaraun area of the state in the morning of Sunday, August 22.
It is also not clear if any ransom was paid, as the kidnappers had demanded for a ransom of $800,000 equivalent to about N500 million naira two weeks ago.
Troops from 16 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with the DSS and other security agencies in the state had few days ago arrested a 27 year old man, Stanley Woniowei, from Abebiri community in Southern Ijaw LGA in a combined effort to rescue the octogenarian.
A family source, who confirmed her release, said they are yet to make it public due to the urgent need to proceed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention aimed at bringing her out of her traumatized state and ensure she is well and sound.
Efforts to get the Spokesman of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat and his other counterparts proved abortive as their phone numbers were not reachable as at the time of filing this report.
It will be recalled that the gunmen dressed in military uniform kidnapped Madam Benson, after they stormed her residence at the old Assembly quarters, Azikoro road in the State capital on the night of Tuesday July 20, 2021.
It was the second time that Madam Benson will be kidnapped as the same ugly fate befell her on January 14, 2013 when 10 gunmen abducted her from Korokorosei, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to an unknown destination and was subsequently released with the effort of security agencies in the state.
