The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to deploy Special Forces from the Nigerian Police Force, as well as the Nigerian Army and Navy, on a rescue mission to liberate abduction victims in Lagos and other parts of the country.
The House also urged the Federal Government to carry out training of Special Forces across the security agencies, “who will be mandated to patrol waterways, creeks and highways across the country”.
Mufutau Egberongbe, a member of the House, moved a resolution headed “Urgent Need to Curb Incessant Kidnappings in Lagos and Other States Across the Country” in plenary on Wednesday”.
Egberongbe bemoaned the fact that Nigerians are nearly daily bombarded with reports of kidnappings in various regions of the country.
He quoted a report from September 29, 2021, claiming that there had been a rise of kidnappings in Lagos State, with numerous persons claimed to have been kidnapped in a matter of weeks and the kidnappers demanding large ransoms.
He said, “The House is concerned that the kidnappers always escape with their victims through the waters and hide in the creeks as they wait for ransom”.
“The House is disturbed that the kidnappings cut across all areas of the country, as there have been several reports of the kidnappers blocking highways and attacking unsuspecting commuters”.
“The House is worried that when victims are taken into the various hideouts, the female victims are mostly raped while some victims are killed and their corpses abandoned in the bush”.
