Residents of Kanga-Metta community in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State have sent a passionate save our soul (SoS) appeal to the Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, to, as a matter of urgency, come to their aid over perennial flooding which has caused gully erosion that has rendered the area’s only road unusable.
The community made the appeal in Ilorin through its Secretary, Muritala Yero, who led some community members to the office of a national newspaper in Ilorin.

Yero described the neighborhood’s issues as follows: “The lone route serving the community has become a death trap as a result of gully erosion caused by flooding everytime it rains,” he stated.
He explained that the route has become impassable for residents as well as visitors and traders who come to the area to transact business.
“It is always difficult for people to move to the community during each downpour,” Yero lamented.
He recalled how erosion had washed away some houses in the past, trapping children in the gully whenever there was a downpour in the area.

The secretary said, “Erosion has flooded many schools and residential buildings that were close to the road paths. The gully has crippled the socio-economic life in the community as many residents have fled the community to other developed areas of the state”.
“Several efforts have been made by the community to ensure that the road becomes passable but to no avail. Even Kwara State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Rotimi Iliasu, sent Chairman of Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency, Kale Oloje to the site for on-the-spot assessment”.
He urged the state government to reconstruct the road and provide adequate drainage so that water can flow freely whenever it rains, protecting people’s lives and property as well as visitors to the area.
“We hope the State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, will look into our problems and construct the road from Onitiku junction to Akere-biata Sobi road in Ilorin East Local Government,” Yero said.
The secretary, on behalf of the community, pledged their unwavering support for the current administration in the state.
