Lightening has reportedly killed a student of Martha Dey High School, Imiringi, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, identified as Stephen Akanama, while playing football in the rain with his friends.
The sad incident happened on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
Nigerdeltaconnect gathered from community sources that the late Stephen, a JSS 1 student, was from Kolo community but was schooling at Imiringi, where he was living with his aunt.
A source in the community said the deceased was playing football in the rain with his peers and met his sad death when he was struck by lightening while trying to retrieve the ball from across a piece of land where he and his friends usually played football.
According to SaharaRepoters, the football pitch is located behind a popular bar known as Blue Bar.
A source said family members rushed the boy to Christ the King Hospital but was unfortunately
confirmed dead on arrival.
The unfortunate incident is a classical case of “man proposes but God disposes” as a relation of the deceased, according to SaharaReporters, said the late Stephen was indoors all through on Wednesday until a heavy rainfall started.
Community sources said sleepy town of Imiringi has been thrown into mourning since the incident happened.
Spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asimin Butswat, said the incident had not been formally reported at the Kolo Divisional Headquaters which covers the area.
In a telephone chat with Nigerdeltaconnect, a chief in Imiringi community, Sample Sunday,, who confirmed the incident, said the remains of the deceased has since been buried.
