Lionel Messi, star of football, has consented to the protraction of his contract to an extra 5 years under Barcelona while agreeing to a fifty per cent slash of his annual 700 million euro pay.
Lionel Messi who is a free agent since his contract expiration with Barcelona on June 30, claimed the Copa America title after leading the Argentina team to victory beating Brazil in a tight 1-0 match.
Messi has affirmed adding an extra five years to his contract with Barcelona even though there had been talks about his leaving Barcelona last year August which he was unable to see through due to some disagreements on his release clause.
The situation had featured La Liga and Barcelona presidents clarifying that discussions on Messi’s release clause had expired June 10 and that any interested suitor would have to pay 700 million euros before the star player would be free to leave, which seemed like an impossible deal.
When sports expert Euan McTear was asked why Messi’s contract had been extended to as long as five years, the expert stated that there was a huge chance Messi would be actively playing for only the first two while the last three years were so that Messi is fortified as an Ambassador of the club.
According to the expert, this is the reason fifty per cent is slashed out of his pay so they can cover payment for five years while they are still able to officially retain him.
The 34-year-old player would be spending an additional five years in the club he had been with for an initial 21 years. This means he would be hitting the record of having spent 26 years by the time he is done with Barcelona.
