Atletico Madrid maintained the top position ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid to be crowned La Liga champions on Saturday, May 22, thanks to Luis Suarez’s 21st goal of the season in a 2-1 comeback victory at Real Valladolid.
Luis Suarez has lifted La Liga for the fifth time; this time with Atletico Madrid after four years with Barcelona where he netted 195 goals in six seasons but was asked to exit the Nou Camp last summer.
Following his departure from Barcelona in September, the 34-year-old signed a two-year contract with Diego Simeone’s side and ended the season as Atletico’s top scorer with 21 goals.
After helping Atletico Madrid to their first league title in seven years, the. Luis Suarez annouced that he will stay at the club next season.
“Yes, I’m sure (I’ll stay), Atletico welcomed me from the minute I arrived. I asked the club if there was room for me on the museum wall to make history at Atletico.”
Luis Suarez was in tears at full-time on Sunday afternoon, believing he was underestimated by Barcelona after being forced to leave the Nou Camp last summer after six successful seasons.
“It’s tough. The situation I had to live through, the way I was looked down on, but Atletico opened the door for me. A lot of people have suffered with me – my wife, my children.”
“Day by day, they are the ones who have suffered the most from my many years in football”.
“We’ve had a great year. Despite the difficulties, we were the most consistent team and we’re the champions. In the first half of the season, we had an efficiency that wasn’t normal.”
Atletico Madrid won their 11th La Liga title after goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez in the second half reversed Oscar Plano’s opener for Real Valladolid.
Simeone’s side relegated Valladolid, and their victory was vital because reigning champions, Real who needed to defeat Villarreal to claim the title, also overcame a deficit to win 2-1, with late goals from Karim Benzema and;; Luka Modric.
The Rojiblancos ended two points ahead of Zinedine Zidane’s side, and Suarez’s former club Barcelona finished fifth, five points behind.
