Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi is set to agree a new five-year deal with the La Liga giants.
It will be recalled that the Barcelona captain’s contract expired on June 30, 2021 while he was on international duty for his country, Argentina and talks have been ongoing to see how the petit hit man can be retained.
It was gathered that “Messi had an agreement on a new deal with Barcelona until June 2023, but he will sign a five-year contract to help the club with his salary paid on long term.
Messi’s new contract will run till June 2026 and there will be a clause included for €600m.
It is just a matter of time before the official announcement from Barca and Messi’s team.
It was further gathered that part of the conditions in the new contract extension is that their will be a 50% pay cut. The implication of this is that Messi’s salary will be reduced by 50 percent.
With Antoine Griezmann on Barcelona’s top list to be off-loaded on loan to other clubs to free up his huge wage bill, the club will now have something to take care of Lionel Messi’s salary long pay.
Leo who just won his first major international trophy with his country Argentina last weekend in the just-concluded South American Copa America where he performed excellently after recording four goals to his name in the tournament.
He equally won an award as Copa America most valued player of the tournament ( MPV).
Leo Messi’s performance in the 2020/2021 season has also been incredible with Barcelona after scoring 38 goals in 47 games and winning the 31st Copa del Rey title with his club.
No wonder Barcelona new President Joan Laporta is doing everything to keep the six-time Ballon d’ Or award winner at Camp Nou to scare off all other competitors such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and other top European clubs.
Once Messi’s contract extension is announced, the 34-year-old will be staying at Camp Nou till he is 39 years old.
