Troop Desai has been named Group Executive, Tax by the MTN Group.
Her appointment as a group executive, according to the group, will take effect on September 13, 2021.
Troop was an attorney with experience in labour law, immigration law, corporate tax, mergers and acquisitions tax, tax incentives, corporate governance, legal and finance, as well as tax policy and revenue authority interaction, according to the statement.
She will join MTN from PriceWaterhouseCoopers, where she was a partner in the corporate tax department, handling various kinds of tax risk for multinationals and South African-listed customers across Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the statement.
Troop was the head of tax for SSA at General Electric before joining PwC. She has served on the boards of several GE companies in South Africa.
Desai’s appointment as MTN’s tax boss comes a year after the telco was let off the hook following a year-long legal battle with Nigerian authorities over a $2 billion tax levy.
MTN Nigeria’s tax dispute with the country’s attorney general has been ongoing since September 2018, when the country was hit with a claim for $2 billion in outstanding taxes.
She graduated from Wits University with a bachelor’s degree in law, a higher diploma in tax law, and an MBA.
