Following commercial banks’ disconnection of MTN customers from accessing banking channels, including the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and banking apps.the Mobile Network Operator is exploring other electronic payment platforms for the use of its customers to recharge their phones..
The alternative channels, according to the mobile service provider, include payment solutions platforms such as Flutterwave, Jumia Pay, OPay, Kuda, Carbon and BillsnPay.
In a statement made on Saturday by the Senior MTN Manager in charge of External Relations, Funso Aina, customers could also recharge airtime by dialing *904# and *606#.
The PUNCH had reported earlier that millions of MTN subscribers were stranded on Friday, April 2, as commercial banks disconnected MTN customers from banking channels.
According to the latest statistics obtained from the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) MTN alone has 77.35 million subscribers, meaning all of these people could not recharge their phones last Friday.
It will be recalled that the Telco had reduced the banks’ commission from an average of 3.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent hence the banks’ disconnection of MTN subscribers from accessing their channels.
The banks had written to MTN to revert to the old commission, otherwise, they would block MTN airtime in all their channels.
MTN refused to revert and the banks carried out their threat, leaving millions of MTN subscribers frustrated as they were unable to recharge airtime via USSD amid the Easter celebrations.
The PUNCH further reported that Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had said the matter would be resolved. “We have reached an advance stage of resolving the issues, for the services to be restored to our citizens,” he had said.
But in reaction, the MTN in a statement on Saturday, said, “It will interest you to note that for the benefit of our customers who have been greatly inconvenienced by the service suspension, we now have alternative channels of accessing MTN services electronically.
