The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC has warned against patronizing medicine hawkers; abuse of Codeine drugs as well as self-medication.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Moji Adeyeye who spoke during the flag-off of the Agency seven days Awareness Campaign in Port Harcourt also cautioned against the use of a Kerosene tanker to load groundnut oil and the danger of using potassium bromate to bake bread.
The message of the Director-General of NAFDAC which was read out by the NAFDAC South-South Zonal Director, Subulade Isijola equally warned against the use of Sniper to preserve any type of food or to keep flies away from meat, saying that the chemical in the sniper could be dangerous to human health.
“Rivers residents should be careful of what they take into their body system to avoid overdose, drugs like sniper should be discouraged, we discovered that there is a harmful chemical in the drugs that upset the brain and damage the heart”.
The message also emphasized the dangers of excessive oil consumption, the use of formalin on food and its associated health hazards and the low level of exclusive breastfeeding practice by lactating mothers and its associated health hazards.
“We should also try as much as we can to avoid too much consumption of oil”.
According to Professor Moji Adeyeye in her message by Isijola said the sensitization became necessary to promote the health of the people and intensify and expand the scope of the informer and former behaviour change communication strategies to reach the Vulnerable Communities especially at the grassroots
Our Correspondent reports that representatives of Pharmaceutical Organization, Nigerian Custom, Road safety Civil Defense, Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Civil Society Organizations, Community Leaders amongst others were present at the flag-off awareness campaign.
