The Interim Administrator and Chief Executive Officer, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Effiong Okon Akwa has intervened to stop the communal war ravaging Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Akwa in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Youth Matters, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, urged the warring communities to cease fire and to allow peace return to the area.
Eradiri, a former Bayelsa State Youth Commissioner and former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, said peace was required to attract development and investors to all parts of the Niger Delta region.
Sympathising with the families that lost their loved ones to the bloody conflict, he described the war as disheartening, adding that there was no justification for communities sharing the same local government area to pick up arms against each other.
He said: “I am disheartened by the continuous crisis and desecration of our people in Mbo Local Government in Akwa-Ibom state. these issues have been on for too long and I call on the government, chiefs and youth leaders of the community to restore peace in the area.
“The Niger Delta Development Commission is willing to work with the youth leaders of the communities to see how we can put an immediate end to the clashes as it doesn’t speak well of our people”.
He invited all stakeholders to a roundtable to discuss the issues and find permanent solutions to them.
