A New York Police Department (NYPD) captured an ex-prisoner accused of fatally shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend as she left her baby shower in Harlem, New York with her new partner on Thursday, September 16, after a four-day search.
At a press briefing, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea announced the arrest of Justin Soriano, 40, for the murder of Shanice Young. Soriano was captured in the Bronx early Thursday, according to officers. He was charged with first degree murder, terrorizing, possessing a firearm, and acting in a child-abusing manner.
“Our hope here is that this apprehension started at the process of closure for the family and just as important for the community for this terrible, terrible crime,” Shea said.
Shanice Young, 31, was fatally shot in the head in the presence of her two children on September 12th. According to police sources, her ex-boyfriend and current partner were fighting about who was the father of her unborn child.
According to her devastated relatives, she was meant to give birth to her baby this week, just before her death. “He’s Satan,” said Young’s father, Thurman Young. “Say that’s the one word I used to describe him.”
Young stated that the charges press against Soriano, second-degree murder, wasn’t enough for him, and it wouldn’t bring back his daughter life.
Young screamed about the murder charge “Is that all?”, his voice rising. “He should be charged with two counts of murder. Stating that the baby inside her womb was a person too, that baby was going to live.
After he was detained, Soriano avoided questions from reporters and cries of “shame” from a crowd of residents.
Soriano was once convicted of narcotics possession in 2008, and for selling a controlled substance in 2011, according to police records. He was freed from prison in 2018 and his parole expired in June 2020. He had a total of 17 past crimes, on charges including drugs, firearm possession and resisting arrest, police said on Thursday.
