Everyone has had the urge, in one way or the other, to give up on something. It could be their lives, jobs, career or academics. They suddenly lose happiness and fulfilment in the things they do. It seems as if love has gone into extinction, you no longer see that love and acceptance that you long for. In the areas of career or business you are also struggling to survive but it just isnt working. Life becomes so choking that you just want to let go.
Life is all encompassing. In it you find happiness, hope, enthusiasm excitement, creativity, despair, discouragement as well as failure and the desire to quit.
Charlene Tops, a certified life coach wrote in lifehack that “Our brains are wired to immediate rewards in return. We were born to look for instant gratification because in the ancient times, getting immediate benefits was essential for survival. We are very much present-oriented, and so when we are not getting what we want immediately, we get anxious and want to give up”
Once in a while, the thought of wanting to give up comes, but giving up is not the best option. Those who became successful tried severally and succeeded thereafter. If they had given up, their innovative ideas and inventions would not have been known and enjoyed today.
If people like the footballer, David Beckam had given up when people hated him for making England miss out of Argentina 1998, he wouldnt have become a successful player leading different teams. How about Michael Faraday, Walt Disney, Aliko Dangote, who has also lost some major investments.
Charlene Tops, recommend you do the following who en you feel like giving up your life, goals, aspirations, academics, projects. One has been added to it.
1. Remember why you started and how much you really wanted it
If the reasons for starting the project gives you pleasure, then you should think twice when the thought of letting go comes to mind. Think about how much you have really invested into it.
Charlene stated that one should think back to the moment that the project, goal, or concept was conceived. Remember the joy and thrill of the adventure ahead?
“Going back to the beginning brings into focus the purpose of your endeavor”, she said.
When you are considering taking your life, consider those who care about you. How long it will take them to miss you. Consider the joy you would have brought to them and the value you would have added to their lives.
2. Look into the reason why you want to give up
Look critically at the reason for wanting to give up. Is it stress, lack of love or even money? The feelings of wanting to quit can be overwhelming.
Many reasons make one want to quit. Be diligent in figuring out what the real issues are and tackle them specifically. Once you see what is causing the feeling, you can address it.
3. Picture in your mind the Ultimate Result
When the thought comes, keep in your mind the picture of the end result. A mental picture of what you want to accomplish will keep you going..
4. Make a plan and have a backup.
Before you begin anything have a back up plan in mind so that when frustration comes, you can have alternative plan put to action. Always have an outlined plan of action. You can write a list, make a breakout chart, or form a checklist for tasks completed along the way. By having a plan in place, when you feel like giving up you can look at the plan and refocus on the steps needed to reach the goal, Charlene stated.
