According to NSCDC, as part of its mandate, the Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration and Gender Unit in collaboration with Handicapped Education Foundation (HANDEF), trained the PWDs with a view to ensure self defense.

This was contained in a press statement made available to Niger Delta Connect on Thursday in Akure by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC Daniel Aidamenbor.

According to the statement, “the issue of security challenges and sexual threats which is daily becoming a worrisome trend in the society was dealt with at the training session facilitated by officers of NSCDC”.

It noted that, while presenting a lecture on sexual violence, DSC Yemi Faboyo-Agbede of Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration and Gender Unit, Ondo State Command pointed out suspects of sexual violence to include friends, neighbour and close relations.

She submitted that simple methods of escape that could be employed are; constantly looking back to assess the level of risk, the use of pepper spray, negotiation skills and speaking out if such an offence ever occurs.

“Always encourage victims to speak up in the face of offence and also follow through with prosecution of the culprit to get justice for the victims”, she said in conclusion.

Also, another senior officer, Fagite Valentine who took the participants through a practical session on self defense skills, identified the need for self awarenesses of strengths and weakness, route planning, good mental attitude and also urged those with disabilities to take extra care to stay safe amongst many others.

Meanwhile, Mrs Rachael Arohunmolase spoke on Ondo State government’s effort in stemming the tide of sexual violence with the signing of Violence Against Persons Prohibition bill (VAPP bill) by His Excellency, Arakunrin Odunayo Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
