The National President MOUAU Alumni Association, Dr Obasi Igwe Oscar has been elected into the 6th Governing Council Board of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).
The election came on the heels of the expiration of the tenure of members of the 5th Governing Council Board in May 2021.
Obasi who holds a doctorate in Agricultural Economics was elected unopposed as convocation representative MOUAU governing council, in an election that only required the ratification of majority members of the association.
Elected as the president of the MOUAU alumni association in December 2019, Obasi describes his election into the council as a landmark achievement.
In an exclusive interview with Niger Delta Connect, he stated that his election into the governing council has established the relevance of the alumni association in the university.
“It has established the relevance of the alumni association in the university as a major stakeholder; since the council is the highest decision making body of the university. For the alumni to be represented at that level it means the alumni has come of age and can contribute meaningfully to the running of the university.”
Obasi Igwe, a one-time student union government president of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, also held the position of SUG PRO during his undergraduate days.
Obasi describes members of the alumni association as major stakeholders deserving of a seat at the Governing Council. A member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, MOUAU, Obasi lectures in the Department of Agricultural Economics.
He revealed that his membership of ASUU gave him an edge because the position of convocation representative is meant for either alumni or academic staff, adding that in most universities, the position is left for the alumni.
Obasi Oscar who enjoys the support of most of the alumni chapters stated that it was through the grace of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Maduebibisi O. Iwe that he was elected into the governing council. He went further to thank the VC for believing in members of the alumni.
“We want to thank him for believing in the Alumni, believing that we are major stakeholders and we should be giving such space to express ourselves.”
The Governing council of MOUAU exercises general oversight of the institution and its affairs and it’s made up of eight (8) external members and seventeen (17) internal council members.
Dr Obasi Oscar who is the 3rd elected President of the MOUAU Alumni Association is the latest member of the council after an election that was witnessed by a mammoth crowd of former students of a great citadel; who came in solidarity from all parts of the country.
Dr Obasi Igwe Oscar was born on the 22nd of June 1977 and hails from Uburu in Ohoazara Local Government Area of Ebony State.
He is married with a son and is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.
