Orbunde served as Governor Ortom’s Chief of Staff before resigning in September to pursue his governorship ambitions.
Babs Usigbe, a local publisher who witnessed the collision, said the governorship candidate had a minor head injury.
When the accident happened, Orbunde was supposed to be returning from a decampment ceremony in Gboko at 5.00 p.m.

According to Orbunde;
I was on my way from Katsina Ala to Gboko and back to Makurdi when I ran into the accident.
A picnic commercial vehicle which was coming from Makurdi was overtaking even at a straight road. Instead of the driver of the vehicle to return to his lane, he faced the vehicle in which the governorship aspirant was, hitting it against a tree.
“Orbunde had a slight head injury but one of the passengers from the commercial vehicle died on the spot while eight other passengers were seriously injured,” Usigbe, an eyewitness said.
According to the eyewitness, the governorship candidate and his driver, as well as the injured individuals, were rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
Yakubu Mohammed, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Benue State, confirmed the accident and stated one person died in it, but he did not have all the information yet.
“It is true there was an auto crash but am yet to get full details of the accident. However, I can confirm that one person died,” Mohammed said.
Attempts to contact the gubernatorial candidate’s media contact, Tahav Agerzua, were unsuccessful since he did not answer calls to his cellphone.
