At least one person has died in a clash between two factions of the National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
According to SaharaReporters, the incident occured in the early hours of Tuesday, March 9, when members of the NURTW engaged in free for all fight.
It was gathered that the Union leaders caused the chaos around the Oja Oba area, on Adesida Road as residents and traders scampered for safety due to the sporadic shootings in the area.
“The drivers, armed with dangerous weapons, are currently attacking one another and their personal vehicles as traders and commuters scampered for safety,” SaharaReports quoted a resident as saying.
The deceased identified as Ademola Adegboyegun, was said to be a member of the union and was shot dead during the fracas at the old Garage area in the state capital.
At the time of filing the report, the corpse was deposited in front of the palace of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo.
Sources added that the Post Office/Texaco stretch of Oyemekun/Adesida Road, was deserted, as motorists, taxis and other vehicles were making U -turn at Post Office.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of Ondo State Command, Mr Tee Leo-Ikoro confirmed the incident, stating that investigation had commenced into the matter to get to its root.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Government has announced an indefinite suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers across the state.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Special Duties and Strategy, Doyin Odebowale, also ordered the NURTW members to immediately vacate all motor parks across the state.
