One person was on Wednesday shot dead and four others injured when policemen engaged in a gun duel with bandits in Owerri, Imo State.
The incident took place beside the Spibat Mansion owned by a former governor of the state, Senator Rochas Okorocha.
Residents and passers-by either locked themselves or scampered in different direction for safety during the incident which occurred around 6:00pm.
According to an eyewitness, the unidentified victim died as a result of stray bullet as the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team engaged the bandits in a cross fire.
Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen and the police operatives engaged themselves in the battle from the Umuodu- Spilbat Road.
The source said “Yes, one person was hit by a stray bullet at Ama Oke near Okorocha’s Spilbat mansion and he died. IGP’s IRT operatives were chasing some gunmen and there was a shooting spree. The area has been deserted. People have quickly closed shops.
“Also people scampered for safety around a new generation bank at Orji on Owerri- Okigwe expressway and the Nkwoorji market, respectively”.
