Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has debunked the rumour that state governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, travelled to Europe to choose the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates of the party for the 2023 general elections.
Governor Wike, who stated this in Port Harcourt on Thursday, February 17, described the rumour as ‘preposterous insinuations’ and also accused those behind it of deliberately sowing the seeds of discord in a bid to ruin the chances of the party in 2023.
He disclosed that they, PDP governors, have been overwhelmed with calls over a text message from a chieftain of the party, Raymond Dokpesi, that some governors had embarked on a week-long trip to Europe to select who would be the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the party in 2023.
Wike accused Raymond Dokpesi of working for the All Progressives Congress, APC, and he wondered where Dokpesi got such information that the PDP governors travelled to Europe to decide who will be the presidential and vice presidential candidate of the party and why the governors will have to travel all the way to Europe to take such a decision.
He emphasized that fellow PDP governors and himself, do not have anything against Dokpesi campaigning for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but that Dokpesi should be circumspect and desist from causing mayhem in the party.
He further urged Atiku Abubakar to rein in Dokpesi from spreading dangerous rumours capable of polarising stakeholders in the party, noting in 2019 the PDP governors without the prompting of Dokpesi, rallied round the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and the governors can do so again, if he picked the presidential ticket.
In another development, Governor Wike dismissed the insinuation that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, wants to usurp the function of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, in a bid to impose the party’s candidate in Osun State.
