In a tension-soaked World Cup qualifier between Portugal and Serbia last Saturday, captain Ronaldo scored an extra time (93rd minute) goal when score stood at 2-2 but centre referee, Danny Makkelie wrongly disallowed the goal, which had obviously crossed the line.
Ronald protested the referee’s decision and was shown a yellow card. Ronaldo stormed out of the pitch before the final whistle, throwing the captain’s armband to the ground, out of anger and frustration.
Should the centre referee be blamed, especially as he didn’t have the benefit of a video assistant referee (VAR) or goal line technology?
