A team of police detectives from Abuja on Thursday, April 15, stormed the Imo State secretariat in Owerri and whisked away two principal officers from the secretariat.
We learnt that those arrested were director of accounts and a personnel of the Open Registry at the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Before whisking them away, the policemen engaged in sporadic shooting that made workers and visitors to the secretariat to scamper in different directions for their dear lives.
A worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity said though the security men wore police jackets, they displayed the firepower of kidnappers.
Our correspondent gathered that the shooting caused pandemonium at the secretariat.
The incident is happening must a few days after unknown gunmen had successfully attacked the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre and Police Command Headquarters in Owerri.
The state Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba confirmed the incident but said it was not carried out by unknown gunmen.
Speaking via telephone in the evening of Thursday, April 15, Emelumba disclosed that the shooting ensued when the policemen felt they could be overpowered since they were few, after a worker at the secretariat challenged them.
He said the worker insisted that they must produce a warrant of arrest before effecting any arrest at the secretariat.
Emelumba also said he was yet to establish the identities of the officials arrested by the cops.
