The Imo State Police Command has dispelled rumours making the round that Imo State Government House and Army Barrack in Owerri were set ablaze.
The police also declared as false an aspect of the report that 15 soldiers were killed during the purported attacks on the facilities.
The command in a statement signed by its spokesman, Bala Elkana said there was no atom of truth in the rumour as it was a figment of the imagination of its peddler.
While describing the rumour as the handiwork of mischief makers and conflict entrepreneurs, the police urged members of the public to be wary of the rumour as it was intended to cause panic and instill fear in Imo people.
Elkana said; “The attention of the Imo State Police Command has been drawn to a post making the rounds on various social media platforms stating that the Army barracks and Imo State Government House were attacked, and 15 soldiers shot dead.
“The command hereby wish to inform the general public that there was no such attacks in the places mentioned in the write up, that is just the figment and imagination of the author.
“To this end, members of the public are advised to disregard the news, as it is the handiwork of mischief makers and burgeoning conflict entrepreneurs.
“The Commissioner of Police therefore warns the public to be wary of such posts, as it is aimed at causing palpable tension, as well as instilling fear in Imolites. It further warns mischief makers to desist from such fake alarms/news , else they face the wrath of the law.
“In the meantime, peace has largely been restored to Imo State and business entities, especially night crawlers and hospitality patrons to feel free, come out en masse in pursuit of their regular pleasure”, the statement said.
