Operatives of the Imo State Command in the night of Thursday, June 3 shot and killed four persons suspected to be the unknown gunmen that wreaked havoc at Orji flyover in Owerri, Imo State.
The unknown gunmen had in the evening of the fateful day, shot dead three civilians including a truck driver.
The police spokesman in the state, Bala Elkana who confirmed the story disclosed that special forces of the command intercepted the gang of hoodlums at the flyover.
According to him, the gangsters rode in two vehicles, a blue Toyota Hilux and a white colour bus.
Elkana claimed the police special forces engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel that lasted for 40 minutes and killed four of them.
He further disclosed that the police are on the trail of the hoodlums that escaped with bullet wounds.
“On 3rd May, 2021 at about 1700 hours, following an intense monitoring, Police Special Forces Intercepted a gang of hoodlums masquerading as unknown gun men along Orji flyover.
“The hoodlums rode in two vehicles, a blue Toyota Hilux and a white colour bus. They went on a shooting spree, killing three unarmed civilians.
“The hoodlums were however engaged in a gun battle by Special forces. The gun battle lasted for about 40 minutes and the hoodlums eventually bowed to the superior firing power of the Police and other supporting security agencies.
“Four of the hoodlums were fatally injured while others escaped with bullet wounds. The special forces are still on the trail of the escaping suspects. Members of the public will be updated on the outcome of the operation in due course.
“The Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc commended the gallant efforts of the teams in engaging the armed bandits and safeguarding the public space.
“He calls on the peace-loving people of Imo State to continue to support the Police with credible information on the movements and activities of criminal gangs in their neighbourhoods. Together we can continue to keep Imo State safe”.
