The spokesman of the police in the state, CSP Michael Abattam disclosed this in a statement in Owerri.

He disclosed that the police swiftly mobilized to the headquarters of Njaba Local Government Area at Nnenasa on getting wind of the murder of the traditional rulers while they were holding a meeting with the Chairman, Interim Management Committee of the council area, Emeka Iheanacho.

According to Abattam, a police patrol team informed the operatives mobilized to the area that the bandits disappeared into the surrounding bushes after carrying out the dastardly act.

The police spokesman noted that the council boss summoned a meeting of 15 traditional rulers in the area without informing the police or any other security agency.

He disclosed that as the meeting was in progress, the bandits struck, opened fire on the traditional rulers and killed two of them while the third traditional ruler sustained bullet injuries.

Abattam gave the names of the dead traditional rulers to be Eze Anayo Durueburuo of Okwudor Autonomous Community and Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ohebinowere Autonomous Community while the injured traditional ruler is Eze A. N. Onyeka of Nkume Autonomous Community.

The police spokesman noted that the police currently maintain patrol teams in the area following the recent burning down of the Njaba Police Station by criminals.

Abattam said; “It is on record that, the police station in Njaba was recently attacked and raised down by hoodlums suspected to be IPOB/ESN terror groups, where two police officers lost their lives. Thus, the command had to post Policemen to the area on vehicular patrols to help in checkmating crimes and criminalities. Pending when a new police station will be rebuilt.

“The command is exploring all avenues possible to see that the fleeing bandits are arrested and prosecuted.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Rabiu Hussaini psc, while condoling with the families of those who lost their lives, enjoined all and sundry to be law abiding and go about their lawful businesses, assuring Imolites of the command’s commitments to arrest and bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime.”
