Imo State police has re-arrested three murder and kidnap suspects who escaped during jailbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Owerri on April 5, 2021.
The police spokesman in the state, Bala Ekana disclosed this in a statement dated May 18, 2021. Ekana identified the re-arrested suspects to be Cosmas Mbamara, Okafor George Chisom, 35 and Nwankwo Levi, 35.
The police spokesman said the trio were facing different charges in relation to murder and kidnapping before bolting from prison custody.
The statement reads;
“On 18th May, 2021 at about 0700hours, following a sustained monitoring, detectives from Oru West Division successfully rearrested one Cosmas Mbamara ‘m’ of Ohakpu area, Mgbidi, Oru West, who escaped from Correctional Centre, Owerri on 5th April, 2021 during a jail break.
“The suspect was facing trial for murder when he escaped from the correctional Centre.
“On the same date at about 1000hours, Surveillance Team from Orlu Division arrested one Okafor George Chisomo “m” 35 years old, of Ezeachi area, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo state.
“The suspect was arrested at Umuaba Village, Orlu LGA during a well coordinated operation. He is involved in series of murder in Orlu and environ.
“One of the murder charges he is facing at Orlu High Court happened in November, 2019 when he slaughtered one Matrida Eboh ‘f’ . He escaped from Correctional Centre, Owerri during the jail break.

“In a related development, detectives from Okigwe Division rearrested one Nwankwo Levi ‘m’ 35 years old, of Okigwe area. The suspect was arrested on 13th May, 2021 in his hideout at Okigwe.
“He was facing charges of kidnapping and armed robbery before his escape from the Correctional Centre, Owerri during the said jail break.
“These arrests followed the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Abutu Yaro, to Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Commanders of Tactical Units, to ensure that prisoners who escaped from the correctional centre are rearrested to face justice.
Ekana urged members of the public to continue to support the police with credible information in order to ensure a safe Imo State.
He stated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered that the suspects be handed over to Nigeria Correctional Service, Owerri.
The police had on May 17,2021 re-arrested one Eze Obinna of Amaimo, Ikeduru LGA of the state, who also reportedly bolted from Owerri Correctional Service Centre.
The police said Obinna who was clamped I’m prosom custody over a kidnap incident formed another deadly kidnap gang after the jailbreak.
