Operatives of Operation Puff Adder 11 have smashed a robbery syndicate that was terrorizing the people of Eziobodo Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.
The operatives arrested two suspected notorious members of the gang on May 11 following information they received from the community’s vigilance group of the presence of deadly armed bandits in the community.
The spokesman of the police in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu disclosed this in a statement in Owerri.
Ikeokwu further disclosed that the police operatives mobilized to the hideout of the dare-devils and engaged them in a gun duel.
According to him, the police arrested two members of the gang while others escaped with bullet wounds.
He listed exhibits which the police recovered at the hideout to include one AK 47 rifle with breech no 0544 and two magazines containing 2 rounds of live ammunition as well as a bag containing military handkerchief and military camouflage t-shirt.
The spokesman said upon interrogation, the two suspects confessed to being members of the deadly armed gang that had been carrying out bank robbery operations across the state and beyond.
Ikeokwu also said the suspects squealed on some of their partners-in-crime who are now on the radar of the police for possible arrest and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro has commended the police operatives and the vigilance group for the marvelous job.
Yaro enjoined other officers and people of Imo state to emulate this act of patriotism, so that the aspiration of restoring a lasting peace and security in the state could be achieved.
