The Police High Command has ordered the immediate withdrawal of all its personnel attached to Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, all the South East governors, senators as well as political appointees and other high profile persons from the South East.
The incessant attacks on police formations and its personnel in Port Harcourt and the entire South Eastern region was given as reason for the withdrawal.
According to Daily Post, the directive was contained in a police wireless message shared by The Whistler.
The wireless message, issued by the Delta State Police Commissioner, reads in part :
“Sequel to the incessant attacks on policemen/snatching of arms and ammunition by the proscribed IPOB/ESN elements in the eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States and Rivers State, COMPOL DOPS directs you warn personnel that escorts of their principals to the six (6) eastern states is suspended forthwith until security situation improves. Ensure strict compliance please.”
The Delta State acting Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, who confirmed the authenticity of the wireless message, said “it is for policemen attached to VIPS not to escort their men to any part of the eastern state. That is the directive”.
It will be recalled that police formations in the South East region as well as in Rivers State have been the object of attack in recent weeks.
In Imo State, the hoodlums attacked a correctional facility and freed the inmates.
The heavily-armed hoodlums, in addition to razing police stations, have accounted for the death of scores of police men, whose rifles they cart away after killing them. The mode of operation of the hoodlums indicate that their target are the rifles.
The police believe the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as well as the Eastern Security Network (ESN) are responsible for the attacks but the secessionist group deny this claim.
