According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the pandemic is going to drag on for an additional year than necessary because the distribution of vaccines to poorer countries has been insufficient.
Although the UK has given above 10 million covid vaccines to poorer countries the statistics remain that only about 5% of the population in Africa have been vaccinated.
At least 40% of the population in each of the other continents have been vaccinated.
According to BBC News Dr Bruce Aylward, the senior leader of WHO implored that wealthier countries should however release their place in line to push Africa forward so they gain access to drug firms that have been manufacturing these vaccines.
He confirmed that the whole world is moving nowhere out of the pandemic with a whole continent left behind.
A charity organisation, The People’s Vaccine, which has been seen to deliver vaccines to poorer countries discloses a discovery that only 1 in 7 doses was delivered to such countries.
The pharmaceutical firms that were meant to see to this delivery usually considered wealthier countries before they did poorer ones.
Some charity groups further blamed the UK and Canada for still going ahead to collect more vaccines from Covax which was created in the first place to distribute vaccines fairly to all countries.
The issue happened to be that since wealthier countries – including Canada and Britain – were already making deals with pharmaceutical companies that poorer countries had no chance of doing, still receiving from Covax was not right.
Data revealed that the UK collected a little more than 500,000 doses from Pfizer while Canada collected almost 1 million doses from AstraZeneca.
