Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the Abia State police authorities to investigate the case of an Abia Polytechnic student, who was allegedly raped by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad in Aba, which sparked off protests by students of the institution.
According to the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi, who disclosed the information, the Governor directed the Commissioner of Police, Mrs Janet Agbede, to expeditiously investigate the allegations of rape levelled against some police officers from the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Aba, Abia State and to ensure the prosecution of those engaged in harassing law abiding citizens, so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
He said that Governor Ikpeazu also directed the CP to investigate harassment of other citizens in the state by security agents and was actively monitoring the situation with a view to ensuring the protection of all law abiding citizens in the state.
Meanwhile, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, wife of the Governor, has visited the student who was allegedly raped by the policemen and directed that the lady should be moved to another medical facility within the state for better medical care.
Mrs Ikpeazu condemned the action of the police personnel that perpetrated the heinous crime and promised to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet rather those involved in the act should be prepared to face the full weight of the law.
The wife of the Governor, who was represented by Dr Suzzy Nwachukwu, a medical personnel attached to her office, also gave an assurance that her Vicar Hope Foundation would foot the medical bills of the victim.
It will be recalled that students of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba had yesterday, Thursday, protested the alleged rape of a female student of the institution by personnel of the Rapid Response Squad, Aba, whose office is located within Aba North Local Government Area headquarters premises.
