The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi has released 10 inmates from maximum correctional center in Port Harcourt that have been in the prison for over five years and above that have not been to court after their arraignment.
Eight of the released inmates, who were charged with murder, rape and conspiracy have stayed in prison for over 10years and the other two released have stayed for over five years, charge with Burglary and conspiracy.
The CJ said the aim of the goal delivery is to decongest the prison and advised the released inmates to found their selves lucky but to remodel their behavior in the society.
He appeal to Director of Public Prosecution to ensure they look into file sent to them speedily in other to avoid the issue of missing of files and cautioned police officers to investigate matter before charging suspects to court.
Earlier, the Controller General of Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Center, Alex Oditah commended the judiciary for the exercise, adding that in will go a long way to decongest the prisons.
He also appeals to the Chief Judge to also consider mentally ill persons during subsequent exercise.
Those released are; Promise Nenule, Mathias Deesi, Uduak Attah, Ikechukwu Lazarus, Samuel Friday, James Sunday, God bless John and Benjamin Adeyemi.
Others are Monday Ubong and Henry Chuwudi Joisah.
Recall that a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt also granted the order of stay of execution, in a suit filed by the Rivers State government seeking to set aside the judgment that released one hundred and fifty inmates from Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.
The presiding Judge, Justice Chiwendu Nwogu, in his ruling granted the stay of execution, after going through motions filed by parties in the matter, saying that for the interest of justice, it is best to stay the judgement earlier delivered by Justice Ollor, pending the decision of Appeal Court.
