44 persons qualified for the ongoing grassroots sports competition organized by the Rivers state government in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sports Federation.
The Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who was represented by his Special Assistance on school sports, Arigbitonye Okiri in Abonima thanked the governor for using sport to rewrite the future of Rivers youths.
He said, “His excellency has deliberately brought sports now to the grassroot We are bringing sports now to the various local government areas, not only Port Harcourt.
“And that is why his Excellency is creating the enabling environment where we can continue to get sports been sponsored not only by government but by private individuals.
“Rivers State is safe and peaceful to continue to strive in sports. It is the thinking of his Excellency the governor of Rivers State to make Rivers State the hob of school sports.”
The grassroots competition is for U-15 junior boys and girls and U-17 senior boys and girls.
The governor also urged the athletes not to relent in developing their talents.
“We are going to take just 44 athletes who will represent the zone at the finals. Rivers State government in partnership with Nigerian school sports federation has packaged what we are doing today as an effort so that we can use the power of sports to reduced crime; we use the power of sports to empower our people, we use the power of sports to bring about peace and development in the state.”
Some of the participants who qualified for the first round of the event thanked the governor of Rivers State for encouraging them.
Our correspondent reports that over 300 athletes from different schools in Abonima participated in the event but 44 were chosen to represent the zone.
