The Rivers State Police Command has assured that it will do everything possible to ensure that Saturday’s local government council election is devoid of any form of violence.
The Command says adequate security has been put in place to make the exercise hold under a peaceful atmosphere across the 23 local government areas.
Spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni said in a statement that to realize the full objectives of the council elections, and engender a seamless exercise, the Command has deployed a total of 17,500 personel.
According to him, the personnel will be complemented by deployments from other sister security agencies, aimed at providing safety, security and the due maintenance of law and order before and after the elections.
He disclosed that there will be total restriction and movement of persons, vehicles or any mechanic propelled engine either on land or waterways between the hours of 12 midnight on Friday 16 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2021.
The statement added that very important personalities (VIPs) and top politicians have been barred from going to any of the voting center with their security details. It stressed that movement will only be allowed from their houses to the voting centres and back, as provided for, by the Electoral Act.
The statement further disclosed that all entry and exit points to the state will be completely blocked until the elections are over, just as there will be no commercial activities close to the polling units.
“The Police and other security agencies will be moving round to ensure that there is strict compliance to this order and possibly arrest and prosecute violators.
“Once again, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Eboka Friday, appeals for the continued support and cooperation of the members of the public in this regard”.
Concluding, Imoni said all these measures are intended to provide a conducive atmosphere, to conduct free, fair and violence-free election that will stand the test of time.
