Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has played down the fears of fans concerning the squad to be used for Nigeria’s last two 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, saying they have already put plans in place to call a good squad despite the travelling restrictions in Europe.
There are still uncertainties over the call up of some key players like; English Premier League contingent including Leicester City pair of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho as well as Everton ace Alex Iwobi and West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi, insisting they might not be available since Nigeria is a ‘Red Zone’ as per COVID-19.
Nigerdeltaconnect earlier reported that, already FIFA has told clubs that they will not be sanctioned if they don’t allow players go for international duty because of health challenges.
However, top Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United have already said they will not release players to any area tagged the ‘Red Zone’.
Over the weekend, Rohr reported that everything is going as planned concerning the forthcoming fixtures, despite travelling restrictions reported the Nation.
The former Bordeaux coach told NationSport.
“All is going well. The list is done; NFF will release the list soon.”
When quizzed about the players involved in the list, Rohr said they called up 23 players plus Captain Musa and they have six players on standby.
“We have a list of 23 plus captain Musa; six players on standby,”
Nigeria need only one point to qualify for the 2021 AFCON which will be hosted in Cameroon next year. The Super Eagles will play Benin on March 27 in Porto Novo and host Lesotho for the final qualifying round in Lagos three days later.
