Former governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson has felicitated with General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), former Military President on the occasion of his 80th birthday, describing him as a father to generation of leaders in the country.
Senator Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, said the former Nigerian ruler made very significant contributions to the development of the country which cannot be forgotten.
The lawmaker added that Babangida still has more to offer Nigeria and prayed for God to continue to guide him in good health, stressing that he has personally gained from his wealth of experience and knowledge in his political career.
He said: “My family and I join numerous friends and well wishers across the country and beyond to congratulate General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida GCFR, former Head of State of Nigeria and foremost elder statesman on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
“He has made profound contributions to Nigeria in the coursee of his many decades of service among other things, as Chief of Army Staff, Military President and currently as Elder statesman who has paid his dues in nation building and continues to be a father to generations of leaders.
“I particularly appreciate that in the course of my service as Governor of Bayelsa State for eight years and even now as a senator of the Federal Republic he has always been available for counsel, advice and to share his perspectives which are always refreshing.
“On his 80th birthday, my family and I felicitate with him, his family, friends and admirers worldwide and pray for many more happy returns in good health as he continues to be of service to the nation and to humanity”, he added.
in another development, Senator Dickson has expressed shock over the demise of former deputy senate president, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu, who died in the early hours of Monday, August 16, in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the former Bayelsa governor described Mantu as an elder statesman and great political mobilizer, who will be missed by all, including his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“It is with sadness that I received this morning, the news of the passing of Senator Ibrahim Mantu, former Deputy President of the Senate and one of the political leaders of our party and our country and a man who was my strong ally in both the party and politics of Nigeria.
“He spoke with me from his sickbed yesterday and we prayed for him to get better only for me to be informed this morning of his passing.
“I have visited the widow, the children and other members of the family this morning. I call for prayers for their comfort and also prayers for the repose of his soul.
“Senator Mantu was an elder statesman and quintessential political organizer, skills which will be sorely missed in our party in which he was a very influential rallying point and in the country at large.
“My condolences once again to his family, his allies and friends across the length and breadth of the country and to Plateau State. May his soul rest in peace”.
