The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the three Service Chiefs whose names were submitted to the upper legislative chamber for confirmation by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The confirmation was made on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 following the report of the Senate Committee on Defence headed by former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, who recommended the senate to receive and consider the report of the committee of Defence.
In the report, Senator Wamakko had stated that the nominees had made themselves available for screening following the upper chamber`s resolution.
The confirmed Service Chiefs are Maj. Gen. Lucky Eluonye lrabor, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS); Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff (COAS); Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS); and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao,Chief of Air Staff (CAS).
The Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan after the confirmation had urged the appointed service chiefs to take the battle against insurgents to the forest.
Further speaking, Lawan declared that the parliament would give in necessary support that would help them achieve success in the battle against bandits while stating that the service chiefs should in turn reciprocate by winning the war. The senator added students abduction should come to an end as it is no longer acceptable.
