Senate President debunks plan to extend Buhari’s tenure

Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmed Lawan has refuted some rumours speculating that he retains legislative powers to facilitate a tenure elongation for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lawan debunked such claims via his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja, who emphasized his commitment to stand by the provision of the constitution which allows a president to hold office for not more than two tenures.

This was contained in a press statement relayed via the official twitter handle of the Senate President.

This rebuttal may not be sounding new to Nigerians as some people have speculated that the President may be interested in running the affairs of the country for some additional time after the expiration of his tenure.
