Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim has come under fire following his statement that Youth Corpers in the country can be mobilized for war.
Ibrahim had while speaking on a national television programme on Wednesday said the youth corps members are part of the national defence policy of Nigeria and can be mobilised for war if need be.
He said the Corps members are on reserve, so, where there is an outbreak of war, they can be trained to fight for the nation.
His statement has sparked condemnation and outrage from some Nigerians who described it as reckless and insensitive, considering the vulnerability of the youth corp members.
Some Nigerians who took to social media to express their displeasure, said the country has enough trained soldiers to defend the nation, and does not need young graduates to risk their lives.
A Twitter user, Onome Ijeh said: “He must be joking. Send people who are already trying to create a better life for themselves despite the difficulties and uncertainties to war so that they can meet their untimely deaths for a country that has failed them in so many ways. No way”!
Another Twitter user, Ojays T. said:
“A country that does not provide for her youths and does not care if citizens die cannot expect any youth to lay down his or her life for it.
“If not because it is compulsory many will not serve. No free education, no bursary in many states, no free health and no job after so what’s the basis to serve?
“Please do not send my children to war. Publish the names of children of all politicians from oga at the top down to the ward councilors who are currently serving and where they are serving. They should be mobilized to the war front first then ours will consider following”.
A Facebook user, Dexter Sunny Ayodele said, “There probably couldn’t be better military men ready for war at any time other than parliament members who have unrivaled proficiency in throwing chairs and other lightweight weapons.
“I will use this opportunity to counsel Buhari government to allow sleeping dogs rest in order to avoid unprecedented #EndSARS part 3. Most youths are boiled already. Arming them to go and fight government generated war could mean a shortcut to revolution”.
Also, Len Ray said, ”Ibrahim argued that the NYSC had become more important than ever in the face of the rising calls for secession.
“So this joker thinks they can declare war again on any part of Nigeria that wishes to secede just like they did in 1967 and fooled others to fight along with them under the deception of ‘one Nigeria’? Meanwhile his statement simply shows the thinking and plan of these people”
