Six underage girls were stripped and paraded naked in central India as part of a local tradition( ritual) to summon rain spirits for a rain fall.
The terrible events occurred in a community in Madhya Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region that has been suffering from drought.
The girls, who were reportedly stripped naked and paraded, fall under same age bracket of age five. They were seen walking naked with a wooden shaft on their shoulders and a frog connected to it in a video that went viral online. And the girls were seen going in a procession, followed by a group of women chanting hymns in the footage.
The children gathered food grains from every house in the village during the walking procession, which will be eventually donated to a nearby temple’s community kitchen.
According to reports, residents believe the practice will satisfy the rain deities to send rain to the city, and “we believe this would bring rainfall,” a woman in the procession was quoted as saying by PTI.
The Damoh district collector, S Krishna Chaitanya, said that the girls’ parents had agreed to the procedure and had even participated in it. In such circumstances, the administration can only educate the villages about the absurdity of such beliefs and make them understand that such behaviors do not provide the intended effects,” he continued.
After the recordings went viral, India’s National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights requested a report from the Damoh district administration, which includes the village but the police in Madhya Pradesh claimed there was no formal complaint received about the event, but an investigation will be launched.
Damoh Superintendent of Police DR Teniwar told the Press Trust of India that “If we find out that the girls were forced to walk naked, we would take action”.
